10 Steps to Healing Your Mind and Body with a Naturopath
The day I decided to see a Naturopath, was the day I finally started to feel alive again. I found a glimmer of hope in this journey. It was my dream to become a mother, and it continues to simultaneously be the most beautiful, exhausting, and incredible experience I ever thought possible. But, much like there is no manual to teach you how to be a good parent, I wasn’t prepared for the loss in identity and self-love. I had to learn and unlearn a lot of things in order to practice gentle parenting skills with my children and to be the best mom that I could for them. While I spent years giving all of me to my family, I was running on empty, and completely lost sight of who I was, who I am, what I want, and my purpose. There were no boundaries because I just continued giving, and thought that’s what moms do. I had no guidance, friendships were lost, others were gained, but I continued to battle with the reflection in the mirror, and the postpartum body I did not recognize. I kept comparing my present self to my pre-baby self, who used to be very active and fit. I had all the tools, the vast knowledge of leading a healthy lifestyle, I had too many fitness apps, a home gym, I ate healthy most of the time, but nothing was working. I exercised whenever I could, between baby’s naps, or while the kids slept. Date nights with my husband became non-existent though we both needed this time to reconnect. We realized that we are our own village, and family date nights were all we could do. We did what we could to not lose sight of each other, because it was hard.
VISIT TO NATUROPATH
As I embarked on the postpartum journey of trying to heal my body from the inside out, I decided to see a Naturopathic doctor. I was tired of feeling exhausted, my body was always in pain, my joints hurt, waking up every day only to take ten minutes to let my body adjust. Something wasn’t right and I knew it. No matter how much weight I had lost, no matter how much I thought the “healthy” foods were good for me and helping me get to my ultimate potential, when they were actually making me feel worse, I felt stuck. It was time for change, and this time for good. So, I finally booked that appointment. I wanted to have a deeper understanding of my body’s needs and explore natural ways to enhance my overall well-being. Little did I know that this encounter would unlock the secrets to optimal health through a food sensitivity test, revolutionizing my lifestyle and rekindling my appreciation for the power of nature’s remedies.
ELIMINATING TRIGGER FOODS
Naturopaths focus on treating the whole person, aiming to identify and address the root causes of ailments, rather than solely treating the symptoms. During the session, my Naturopath suggested that I do a food sensitivity test to identify any potential allergens or sensitivities. I said: “absolutely!” The food we consume plays a vital role in our well-being, so I was very intrigued. The food sensitivity test is literally a five second blood test, done at the lab, which is then analyzed to determine your body’s reaction to various foods. I didn’t think my test results would indicate anything significant because I have spent my entire life eating everything. I discovered that certain foods, although deemed “healthy”, I had been consuming regularly were actually causing my body more harm than good. These reactions, although not life-threatening, were impacting my energy levels, digestion, and overall vitality. They were causing inflammation within my body: from stiff joints, to “mommy brain” where everything seems foggy and you can’t concentrate, to feeling constantly exhausted and unmotivated. My naturopath advised that I eliminate all these foods. I embraced this new lifestyle and went cold turkey on these modifications. I waited impatiently for this day, and made sure we went grocery shopping after my appointment. I mean what would be the point of buying food I couldn’t eat? So, we went to the grocery store the same day, took our time and read all the labels to make sure everything we purchased were beneficial for my health.
REDISCOVERING WELL-BEING
Within a few days of eliminating all trigger foods, I started to feel a difference in my body and in my mind. I didn’t expect to feel a difference, frankly I didn’t know what to expect, but I actually felt so much better! I continued to feel better day after day. I encourage everyone to consider exploring the benefits of naturopathy and to seek the guidance of a qualified naturopath. Here are a few key takeaways from my journey that may inspire others to embark on their own path towards optimal health.
- I gravitated more towards fruits and vegetables.
- I jumped out of bed for the first time in years, with no pain or stiffness.
- My energy levels drastically increased.
- I became more mindful of what I put in my body.
- My stool was healthier and I was less bloated.
- I lost 5 pounds the first week (although not my intention, but definitely a bonus)
- I became laser focused on feeling excellent and stayed consistent with this new lifestyle.
- I was HAPPY! My mood had improved significantly!! Hi! Tired mom over here! I had more patience with the kids (I’m already very patient, but those little things didn’t bother me anymore. I felt less triggered, and less overstimulated). I think my husband would definitely vouch for this one.
- My mind was clear! For the first time in years, I began to experience mental clarity. I felt sharper, I could concentrate and was much less forgetful (even while I was being interrupted).
- I began to love me again.
- I paused a little more, and played with my children while I listened to their little voices expressing what was in their hearts and creative minds.
If you’re on your journey to optimum health, no matter which stage of life you may be in, I highly recommend you seek a naturopath that you connect with. You are not the problem, what you’re ingesting may be the reason for your lack of vitality and sluggishness. You deserve to feel your best, and when you feel good, I mean really feel good from within your body, and deep within your soul, you will exude so much more confidence and then it’s a domino effect in the most powerful way. You deserve to be happy and your kids also deserve a happy mom, or dad, or caregiver. Self-care isn’t only about bubble baths and facials, the most rewarding experience we can give ourselves is that of a healthy lifestyle, to nourish your body with foods that will heal you and promote your vitality.
Set yourself up for success with these 10 Steps to feeling your best when seeing a naturopath.
- Follow the Recommended Treatment Plan:
After consulting with a naturopath, it’s important to stick to the treatment plan they have tailored specifically for you. This plan may include dietary modifications, herbal supplements, lifestyle changes, or other natural interventions. Following the recommendations consistently will allow your body to respond positively and optimize your healing journey. - Embrace Dietary Changes:
Nutrition plays a vital role in overall health and well-being. If your naturopath recommended dietary modifications, such as avoiding certain foods or incorporating specific nutrients, embrace these changes wholeheartedly. Focus on consuming whole, unprocessed foods that nourish your body and support its healing processes. - Take Prescribed Supplements:
If your naturopath prescribed herbal supplements or vitamins, ensure you take them as directed. These supplements are often designed to address specific deficiencies, support organ function, or enhance your body’s natural healing abilities. Incorporating them into your routine can provide the necessary nutritional support for your well-being. - Prioritize Rest and Sleep:
Adequate rest and quality sleep are crucial for your body to heal and recharge. Follow a consistent sleep schedule, create a sleep-friendly environment, and engage in relaxation techniques to promote deep and restorative sleep. Make rest a priority and listen to your body’s cues for rest breaks throughout the day. Gone are the days where I used to feel guilty for napping when baby napped, or going to bed when the dishes weren’t done, or the laundry wasn’t folded. I always say, if you don’t take care of your health and wellness, you will eventually be forced to take care of your illness. - Incorporate Physical Activity:
Regular exercise has numerous benefits for your overall health. Consult with your naturopath to determine the appropriate level and type of physical activity that suits your condition and current fitness level. Engaging in activities like walking, yoga, or gentle strength training can improve circulation, boost mood, and support your body’s healing process. - Practice Stress Management:
Chronic stress can impede the healing process and negatively impact your overall well-being. Implement stress management techniques recommended by your naturopath, such as mindfulness meditation, prayer, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. These practices can help reduce stress, promote mental clarity, and support your body’s healing response. - Maintain Open Communication:
Stay connected with your naturopath and maintain open communication throughout your healing journey. Share any concerns, updates, or changes in symptoms with them. This will allow them to adjust your treatment plan if necessary and provide ongoing support and guidance. - Practice Self-Care:
Nurturing your mental and emotional well-being is an essential aspect of healing. Engage in self-care practices that resonate with you, such as spending time in nature, journaling, practicing gratitude, meditation, prayer, or engaging in creative activities. Prioritize activities that promote relaxation, self-reflection, and emotional balance. - Monitor Progress and Adjust:
Regularly assess your progress and make note of any positive changes or improvements you experience. Keep track of any changes in symptoms, energy levels, or overall well-being. This information will help you and your naturopath evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment plan and make any necessary adjustments along the way. - Stay Committed and Patient:
Healing takes time, and it’s essential to remain committed to your healing journey. Be patient with yourself and trust in the process. Understand that results may not be immediate, but with consistency and dedication, you can experience significant improvements in your overall well-being.
Remember, every individual’s healing journey is unique. It’s important to listen to your body, and consult with a qualified naturopath to receive personalized guidance and support tailored to your specific needs.
My personal journey to increased vitality has reaffirmed the incredible potential that lies within naturopathy. While conventional medicine undeniably plays a vital role in our lives, it is essential to acknowledge the benefits of natural healing methods. Sometimes, it can be as simple as completely eliminating trigger foods that cause your body inflammation. The naturopath’s guidance, supported by the food sensitivity test, has allowed me to reconnect with my body and appreciate all it has done for me, nourish it from within, and rediscover the true meaning of well-being.
